Tonight we packed up early from the day of patient care for one of our after hours staff events. Our destination was an apartment complex off of Ashley Phosphate, where we were greeted by an crowd of bright, bilingual Hispanic children. Our activity tonight: planting a garden together.
One of our staff members knows a good bit about gardening and the kids were eager to clear weeds, dig holes, and cradle the baby tomato, basil, and marigold plants into the rich earth. The little toddler, Christopher, waddled around, fascinated by the pink impatiens and the wagging tail of my dog, Pansy.
The scattered buildings of this complex are literally teeming with enthusiastic children. The group from our office included was equally enthusiastic and happy. I was overjoyed by the feeling of having a part of this gardening field trip.
